- Updated: February 25, 2023
The Harvey High School Lakers save their best for last as they erase a double digit fourth quarter deficit and take the lead for the first time in the second half with a clutch 3 ball and only 18.8 seconds left on the clock.
It was a back and forth first quarter that saw John Caldwell and Harvey exchanging baskets and when the horn sounded to end the first quarter it was the Golden Knights ahead 20 – 19. The Second quarter allowed John Caldwell to pull away from the Lakers as the boys from Grand Falls scored 21 points and only allowed 12 from the top ranked Harvey High School Lakers. At the break it was JCS 41 – Harvey 31.
With JCS looking to win a title that eluded them last year they continued their great play and the Golden Knights put up another 20 points and kept the Lakers to 18. With only 10 to play John Caldwell held a 61 – 49 lead. The fourth started great for the Golden Knights and they built the lead up to 15 and were threatening to put it away, but that is when Harvey found their spark. They Lakers started getting stops on defense and converting buckets at the other end. With 1:50 remaining in the game the JCS lead had dwindled down to 4, 72 – 68. The crowd was loud and the atmosphere was electric and with the clock counting down the Lakers drove to the the rim and were late in the shot clock when they kicked it out for a clutch 3 for their first lead since the first quarter. There was 18.8 seconds left when John Caldwell inbounded the ball, but it was stolen by Harvey who took it the length of the floor for a layup and the 76 – 72 lead. John Caldwell would run out of time and the Lakers complete the comeback win.
The Lakers were led by their player of the game, Ben Chessie, who had 18 points and 19 rebounds. Ben Bradford added a game high 22 points and Luke Riley had 14 in a winning cause.
John Caldwell’s Kohen Pietens scored 19 points and was selected as player of the game for the Golden Knights. Lloyd Anthony scored 18, Caden Perley added 15 and Cody Michaud recorded 13 to round out the John Caldwell top scorers.
Congrats to the Harvey High School Lakers for the Championship win!!
